Lesson 4: Publishing Safely — Privacy Settings + Permissions
Why this matters
Publishing is powerful—but you must protect yourself and others. A safe story is a responsible story.
Learning goals
By the end of this lesson, you can:
- Publish with privacy and consent in mind
- Avoid harmful exposure and harassment
- Use basic safety settings on common platforms
- A) Safety checklist before publishing
- No phone numbers, IDs, home addresses, school registers
- No revealing location details that create risk
- No naming/shaming individuals
- Minors protected (avoid clear faces unless guardian permission is explicitly secured)
- Sensitive topics handled carefully (blur, voice-only, silhouettes)
- B) Privacy options (choose what fits your situation)
If your story is sensitive:
- Post as Unlisted (YouTube) and share link only
- Share to a closed group (class WhatsApp) instead of public
- Disable comments if possible
- Use neutral titles that don’t provoke attacks
If your story is safe for public:
- Public upload is ok, but still avoid personal data
- Moderate comments where possible
- C) Permissions & consent (quick reminder)
You should have:
- Verbal consent recorded OR written consent (where possible)
- Clear permission to use interviews/voices
- Safe handling of anyone vulnerable
Mini-task
Write one paragraph: “How I ensured safety and consent in my final project.”
